Bullsharks' Bostwick Bears Down to Beat the Sharks

By Scot Sweet / PCBL Staff Writer

This was the first game of our PCBL Fall Season Championship doubleheader; matching up the 4-5 Santa Monica Sharks against the 6-3 So Cal Bullsharks. This would be our first championship played at Conejo Creek Ballpark in Thousand Oaks; a nice setting for a championship with a tarped outfield fence and a new scoreboard glowing out in left field. It was a cool morning and a perfect day for baseball, so lets get to the action!

The first 4 1/2 innings of this championship contest went scoreless; sending the Bullsharks up in the bottom of the 5th inning with the hopes of being the first to light up that new shiny scoreboard. They start off the inning with Gilbert Salazar who wastes no time as he goes yard, deep to left, for a solo homer. The next batter is Mateo Valadez, who doubles to put a runner on for Julian Chavez. He singles to score Valadez. The Bullsharks end up with a pair of runs in the inning to take a 2-0 lead through 5 complete innings.

As the Santa Monica Sharks come up in the top of the 6th inning, they were still looking for their first hit of the contest. As a matter of fact, Bullsharks pitcher John Bostwick had a perfect game going at this point; since no shark had yet to reach base. That would soon change as the Sharks first batter in the inning, Jeremy Jason, would break up the perfecto as well as the no hitter with a single to give his team their first baserunner of the ballgame. The next batter would go down swinging, sending up Jimmy La Brie who singled for the second Shark hit of the inning. However, the next two batters would go down on strikes; ending the hopes of a Shark rally. They get 2 hits in the inning, but fail to score; still trailing the Bullsharks by a score of 2-0 through 5 1/2 innings of play.

The Sharks would muster one more hit in the ballgame; a single in the 8th inning by David Estrada. Outside of that and the two hits in the 6th, they were totally shut down offensively in this contest by Bullsharks starter John Bostwick. The eventual game MVP, Bostwick was completely dominating. He went the distance, allowing those 3 lone hits and striking out 10 in a solid shutout performance! The So Cal Bullsharks only needed the 2 runs on 3 hits in the 5th, including the solo shot by Salazar, to seal the victory and the championship.

Congratulations to the PCBL Fall Season AA Champion Bullsharks for an great season and for their victory in the big game! Also, hats off to game MVP John Bostwick of the Bullsharks for such a dominant pitching performance in this championship!

Honorable mention in this contest has to go to Sharks pitcher Rich Armendariz who went the distance; allowing only 2 runs on 8 hits with no walks and 3 strike outs. A pretty respectable outing in most circumstances to say the least; accept for on this day where his counterpart was just a little bit better.
