Hammers Nail Royals to Claim Fall Title
By Scot Sweet / PCBL Staff Writer

Beautiful Conejo Creek Park was the setting for this year's AA Fall Championship between the Royals and the Hammers; two solid ballclubs that had battled all season long to earn the right to play in this championship. The Hammers had won their last 4 straight regular season games to get here ... and were looking for their first PCBL title. That being said, let's get into some PCBL Championship baseball!

Matt Graham is the 1st to reach base in this contest with a 1-out walk. He is followed by shortstop Robert Reeves who promptly hits a 2-run homer. The Royals settle for 2 runs in the inning to take the early 2-0 lead.

The Hammers fail to score in the bottom half of the 1st inning, sening the Royals up in the top of the 2nd inning to try and add to their early lead. Anthony Carusa singles to start things off for the Royals. A pair of walks and a fielder's choice follow; leaving the bags full for Dave Parker who singles home a run. The Royals settle for the lone run in the inning; now leading by a tally of 3-0 through an inning and a half.

But here come the Hammers in the bottom of the 2nd inning. With 2 out and 1 on, leadoff hitter Kenny Bernas gets his 2nd hit of the ballgame; a 2-run homerun to put the Hammers on the board. He is followed by Johnathan Kim who duplicates the effort; hitting a solo homer. The Hammers get back-to-back homers and have quickly tied this contest up at 3 apiece through 2 complete innings of play.
The score would remain 3-3 as we entered the bottom of the 5th inning. The Hammers get a 1-out walk from Johnathan Kim; followed by a Roger Acuma single. A fielder's choice, a fielding error and a walk follow to produce 2 runs for the Hammers. Scott Bailey responds with a 2-run double. The Hammers end up with 4 runs in the inning to take a 7-3 lead in this championship as we go into the top of the 6th inning.

The Royals' Robert Reeves strikes again with a solo homer; his second of the ballgame. The Royals settle for the single run in the inning and now trail by a score of 7-4. But the Hammers get that run back in a hurry; courtesy of an RBI double in the bottom of the 6th. We go into the top of the 7th inning with the Hammers leading by a score of 8-4.

With the Royals failing to score in the top of the 7th inning; up come the Hammers in the bottom of the 7th to try to add to their 4-run lead. Josh miranda starts things off with a single. Tim Carlisle follows with an RBI double. 3 batters later, Abe Ortez gets an RBI single of his own. The Hammers get 2 runs in the inning to take a 10-4 lead through 7 complete innings of play.

But the Royals rally in the top of the 8th. Matt Graham is hit by a pitch to lead things off. This paves the way for the hot bat, Robert Reeves. He doubles to score a run. He is followed by Brett Draimin who gets an RBI single. Richard Lizarraga follows with a single to put 2 on for Aaron Saxe; who doubles home a run. Next up is Anthony Carusa, who grounds out, but gets an RBI as a run scores. The Royals get 4 runs in the top of the 8th inning and now trail the Hammers by a narrow 10-8 margin.

But the Hammers get some much-needed insurance runs. The 1st two batters are retired; sending up Derric Taylor who takes one for the team. He's followed by Josh miranda who singles. Tim Carlisle follows with a walk; loading the bases for Scott Bailey. He singles home a pair. The Hammers settle for 2 runs in the inning to take a 12-8 lead as we entered the top of the 9th inning.

The Royals came up in the top of the 9th with the hope of some last-minute heroics; but it was not to be. They were shut down in order; giving the Hammers the Championship. Congratulations to the 2009 Fall Season AA Champion Hammers for holding on to win their 1st title. and congratulations to the Royals for a great season and for a valiant effort in this contest. they are always tough and will most definitely be back!
