Watch Final out and Celebration on

It was a cool and cloudy afternoon at the beautiful confines of Dedeaux Field; home of USC Trojans baseball. Walking up to the main entrance of this legendary stadium; you get an immediate sense of the history of this field and the legends that have played on it. Dave Kingman, Fred Lynn, Barry Zito, Tom Seaver, Randy Johnson and Mark McGuire, just to name a few ... have all began their baseball careers here. We were more than excited to get this second game of our PCBL Championship triple-header under way. With that being said, it's time to "Play Ball!"
The Yankees send up their leadoff hitter, Pete Aguilar, to start things off in this championship. He singles and steals second shortly thereafter. With 2 out, starting pitcher Erec Smith singles to center; scoring Aguilar. The Yankees settle for the single run in the inning to take the early 1-0 lead.

The Red Sox start the bottom of the 1st inning with Jason Trinidad who draws a leadoff walk. He is followed by Mike Erickson who singles to left. The next two batters go down swinging; but a pass ball to Andrew Niles moves the runners up 90 feet. With 2 out and runners at 2nd and 3rd, the next batter is Scott Hollbrook. During his at bat, the pitcher throws errantly to 3rd to try to pick off the runner. Both runs score on the error. Hollbrook walks; as does Ben Guthrie, but the Red Sox settle for 2 runs in the 1st inning; now leading by a score of 2-1.
The Yankees begin the top of the 2nd inning with center fielder Toby DeVille. He singles to right and then steal second moments later. With 1 out in the inning, Robbie Barrow grounds to 3rd, but the throw to 1st is off target and past the 1st baseman. Barrow advances to 2nd on the error and DeVille scores from 2nd. 2 batters later, leadoff hitter Pete Aguilar smokes a line drive down the left field line for an RBI double. The Yankees end up with 2 runs in the top of the 2nd inning to retake the lead; up 3-2.
The game would remain 3-2 Yankees as we entered the bottom half of the 5th inning and the Red Sox sending leadoff hitter Jason Trinidad to bat. He draws a leadoff walk. Mike Erickson follows with a sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher; sending Trinidad to 2nd. With 1 out and Trinidad on 2nd, the next batter is Tom Kennedy. He hits a line drive to right; scoring Trinidad. The Red Sox settle for the lone run in the inning; and are now tied 3-3 with the Yankees through 5 complete innings of play.
The Red Sox come up in the bottom of the 7th inning with the game still locked in a 3-3 tie. they laed off with Mike Erickson who reaches base safely due to a fielding error on the shortstop. He is followed by Tom Kennedy who hits a line drive down the right field line for a double. The next 2 batters go down swinging; sending up Ben Guthrie with 2 out and runners on 2nd and 3rd. He cracks a line drive to right to score both runners. The Red Sox end up with 2 runs in the inning and now lead the Yankees by a score of 5-3 through 7 complete innings of play.
The Yankees come up to bat in the top of the 9th inning with the score still 5-3 Red Sox. They lead off with Laroy Montgomery who reaches safely when an errant throw goes past the 1st baseman and into foul territory. Another throwing error on the play advances Montgomery to 3rd. He scores moments later on a pass ball to pull the Yanks to within 1, down 5-4. With 1 out, Toby DeVille singles to right; keeping the hopes alive for the Yankees. However, the next batter would pop out to 1st and the last out would be recorded as DeVille was thrown out stealing second. The Red Sox hold on to win a tight one by a final score of 5-4.
Congratulations to the O.C. PCBL AA Division Champion Red Sox for the championship victory against a very worthy Yankee squad! And hats off to both teams for a great season, and for making it here to the big game. I'm sure both teams will be here again in the future.
