Royals Roll Rays in Championship Final

By Scot Sweet / PCBL Staff writer

A very Happy New Year to one and all as we meet at York Field in Cerritos for the second game of our PCBL Orange County Winter Championship triple-header. This mid-day matchup would represent the AA-Division; between the 2-3 Royals and the 3-1 Rays.

The Royals jump on top in a hurry in this contest. Leadoff hitter Dustin Williams draws a walk. Three batters later, center-fielder Spencer Hughes gets an RBI double. He's followed by right-fielder Cody Rockwood gets an RBI single to right. The Royals settle for 2 runs in the inning to take the early 2-0 lead.

The Royals come up in the top of the 2nd; still leading 2-0. The combination of a fielder's choice, a walk and a fielding error results in another run for the Royals. They lead 3-0 going into the bottom of the 2nd inning.

The Rays get a run back in the bottom of the 2nd; courtesy of a walk and a fielding error.

They cut the lead to 2; down 3-1 through 2 complete innings of play.

The Royals come to bat in the top of the 5th inning; still leading by a score of 3-1. Leadoff hitter Dustin Williams reaches base due to an error. Jake Kaufman follows with a walk. The next batter is manager Chance Moore. He singles; scoring a run. Two batters later, Cody Rockwood hits a sacrifice fly to center; scoring a run. The Royals come up with 2 runs in the inning to take a 5-1 lead through 4 ½ innings of championship play.

The Rays go down quietly in the bottom of the 5th; sending the Royals back up in the top of the 6th inning to put this game out of reach for good. They lead off with 2nd baseman Dylan Hein who singles to right center. The next 2 batters are walked to load the bases. The next 2 batters go down swinging; sending up leadoff hitter Dustin Williams with 2 out and the bases loaded. He adds the finishing touch for the Royals ... with a grand slam homerun! They get 4 runs in the inning and that would prove to be the last runs scored in this contest. They would go on to win this championship in 9 complete innings by a final score of 9-1.

Congratulations to the Rays for making it to championship Sunday … and to the PCBL OC

AA-Division Champion Royals for never allowing the Rays to get into this contest.
