Sun. 10/10 @ 9am / USC Dedeaux Field

Cardinals -vs- Dukes

Dukes Rally Late to Cut Down the Cards

By Scot Sweet / PCBL Staff Writer

This was the first game of our PCBL Orange County Championship triple-header at beautiful Rod Dedeaux Stadium at USC. The field was in perfect shape for this championship; as was the weather …. so let's get right to the action!

The visiting Cardinals led off the game by sending Oscar Guzman to the plate who draws a walk and steals 2nd soon after. Two batters later, Robert Wasmund is hit by a pitch. He's followed by Tomas Emanuele who also takes one for the team; loading the bases for Oscar Dorado. He hits a sacrifice fly to center to score the run from 3rd. The Cards settle for 1 run in the inning; taking the early 1-0 lead.

The Dukes would come to bat in the bottom of the 2nd inning; still trailing 1-0. They lead off with Miguel Ortega who reaches base due to an error on the shortstop. The next 2 batters go down swinging; sending up Fabian Castaneda with 2 out and a runner in scoring position. He hits an RBI double to tie this game at 1 apiece.

The Cards come up in the top of the 4th inning with the game still tied

1-1. They lead off with Nick Sasano who gets an infield base hit to the right side. Barton Ceroni singled to right. The next batter grounded into a double play; but a run scores when Oscar Cortez reaches base due to a fielding error. The Cards settle for 1 run and take

the narrow 2-1 lead through 3 ½ innings of play.

But the Dukes get the run back in the bottom of the inning. With 1 out, Hector Trinidad singles. The next batter is Miguel Ortega who is hit by a pitch. Two batters later, Ray Pathen hits an RBI single to right center. The Dukes get the 1 run to tie this game up again; now locked at 2-2.

But here come the Cardinals in the top of the 5th. Oscar Guzman and Brett Bigler lead off the inning with walks. Two batters later, Tomas Emanuele scores the RBI single. The Cards settle for 1 run to re-take the lead; now up 3-2 through 4 ½ innings.

The Dukes come up in the bottom of the 6th inning; still trailing 3-2. The first two batters are retired; sending up Hector Trinidad who doubles for his 2nd hit of the game. He is followed by Miguel Ortega who hits an RBI single. The Dukes have once again brought this game to even; tied 3-3.

But once again, here come the Cardinals. They lead off the top of the 7th inning with Brett Bigler who gets his 2nd hit of the contest; a single to right. The next batter is hit by a pitch; the 4th hit batter on the starting pitcher Felipe Serratos; meaning he had to come out. He's replaced by Paul Hayes on the mound. Two batters later, Oscar Dorado gets on due to a fielding error as a run scores on the play. The Cards end up with 1 run to once again take the lead in this championship; up 4-3 through 6 ½ innings of play.

But here are where the Dukes get busy. They lead off with Ray Pathen who got an RBI single in his last at bat. He responds with a single to right, but reaches 3rd base due to a fielding error. He soon scores on a sac fly by Fabian Castaneda. Two batters later, Arron Mitchell, who is hitting for Ken Ungar, singles to left center. He soon moves over to 2nd due to a balk on the pitcher. The next batter is leadoff hitter Rick Fox. He singles to score a run. He later scores on a pass ball to the plate. Paul Hayes follows with a single; followed by Ivan Castaneda who gets an RBI single. The Dukes end up rallying for 4 big runs in the inning; now leading by a score of 7-4 through 7 complete innings

That would prove to be the dagger; as the Cards would come up hitless in their final 2 innings at the plate. Congratulations to the 2010 O.C. Summer Champion Dukes with an impressive late rally to claim the title by a final score of 7-4.
