Toros Top Angels to Claim Summer Title
By Scot Sweet / PCBL Staff Writer

This was the first game of our championship triple-header at the Epicenter in Rancho Cucamonga. This home of the minor league Quakes is the perfect setting for a day of championship baseball. With that being said, let’s go straight to the action …

With both teams failing to score in the 1st inning, the Conejo Angels come up in the top of the 2nd inning to try and strike first in this championship contest. They lead off with Rob Hirsh, who is hit by a pitch. The next batter flies out, sending up Josh Eveland who doubles home a run. The next batter is Kevin Melford, who gets an RBI single of his own. The Angels settle for a pair of runs in the inning to take an early 2-0 lead.

But the Toros get those runs back in a hurry. Peter Nelson singles to start things off for the Toros. Jason Sabolic draws a walk; afterwhich all runners advance on a balk by the pitcher, with a run scoring.  Rod Boaz follows with an RBI single. The next three batters would be retired, but the Toros would end up with 3 runs in the inning to take a 3-2 lead through 2 complete innings.

The Angels fail to score in the top half of the 3rd inning, sending the Toros up in the bottom of the 4th to try and extend their lead. They start things off with Tony Sulser who triples. The next batter flies out, bringing up Mike Grossman who reaches base due to a fielding error. Moments later, a balk by the pitcher scores a run. The next batter strikes out; followed by Jason Sabolic who doubles. The next batter is Rod Boaz, who gets an RBI single; his second in as many at bats. Greg Williams follows with a single of his own. The Toros end up with 4 runs on 4 hits in the inning; now leading the Conejo Angels by a score of 7-2 through 3 complete.

The Toros come up in the bottom of the 4th inning; still leading by a score of 7-2. Leadoff hitter Chris Scott doubles to start things off. The next 2 batters would be retired; sending up Mike Grossman who singles. He followed by Peter Nelson who gets a single of his own. The Toros add a run in the innings and now lead the Angels by a score of 8-2 through 4 complete.

The game would remain 8-2 Toros as we entered the bottom half of the 7th inning. The Toros send up Mike Grossman who draws a leadoff walk. He is followed by Peter Nelson who gets an RBI single. The next 3 Toros would go down swinging; but they manage to add another run in the inning; now leading by a comfortable 9-2 margin.

However, the Angels DO manage to show some signs of life in the top of the 8th inning. The first 2 batters walk; sending up Charlie Hirsh who singles home a run. He is followed by Rob Hirsh who doubles home a run. The Conejo Angels settle for 2 runs in the inning; and now trail the Toros by a score of 9-4.

With both teams failing to score in their last at bats; this would prove to be our final in this AAA Championship. Congratulations to the PCBL Summer Season Champion Toros for an impressive 9-4 victory over the always game Conejo Angels!
